Biography

Mark Ware Sheldon was born on 30 Sep 1842 in the borough of Haddonfield, Camden, New Jersey. He was the son of Thomas Sheldon, born in Delaware, and Martha Dole, born in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

In 1850, Mark lived in Millville, Cumberland, New Jersey, with his parents, Thomas and Martha Sheldon, and 5 brothers and sisters. Another Sheldon, Arlenbridge, lived with the family.

His obituary states that he was Civil War veteran.  Nineteen year old Mark enlisted at Odessa, New Castle, Delaware, on 15 Oct 1862 as a private and was mustered into the 5th Delaware Infantry, Co. K.  He was mustered out at Wilmington on 6 Aug 1863. Mark applied for a pension in about 1897, but his application was deemed invalid on 9 Sep 1897. (The 1890 “Veterans Census” for Delaware was among those destroyed before transfer to the National Archives in 1943.)

On 7 Mar 1868, Mark W. Sheldon, 24, and Clara L. Parnell, 19, were married in Camden, Camden, New Jersey. Clara was the daughter of Peter Parnell. They had at least the following children:

In 1870, Mark and Clara “Shelden” lived in Camden, Camden, New Jersey with son Pemberton. Mark was a farm laborer. Another Sheldon, John, 23 years old, lived with the family.

In 1880, Mark lived in Pencader, New Castle, Delaware, and worked as a farmer. Wife Clara L. and children Pemberton D. and Isabella R. lived with Mark. Mark’s parents were both born in New Jersey.

In 1900, Mark and wife Clara lived in a home Mark owned in Chester Township, Burlington, New Jersey, with 3 children and a grandson. Mark worked as a iron moulder, and daughter Bella was a seamstress. Clara says she has had 4 children, all of whom are living.

In 1910, The Sheldon family, including Mark W., Clara L. and children Anna F. and Mark W. Jr., lived in Haddon, Camden, New Jersey. Mark and Clara have been married for 42 years, and Clara has had 4 children.

Mark Ware Sheldon died on 23 Dec 1928 at 3013 Washington St., Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware, of apoplexy. The informant on his Death Certificate was Mrs. Frank B. Staats of the same home address. He was to be buried at the Riverview Cemetery. He is buried at the Riverview Cemetery, Plot Section E, Lot 125, Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware.
